Has something ever happened to you that made you really upset and you just could not stop thinking about it? You go home and you tell your mom, then you call another friend, the story keeps playing over and over in your mind? Then you can even get up the next day, you feel fine, but then suddenly you remember what upset you yesterday and it starts all over again?
Every time you recall this story and play it out, your body gets the same sensations. The tension, the heart rate quickens, your adrenaline flows. The mind doesn't know that there isn't any clear and present danger, but because you keep recalling the story, the body reacts over and over. This is why we live in a world with so much anxiety. The mind has gotten away from us, we have let it dominate too long. We must find techniques to quiet it down, to stop the story before it takes off like a runaway train.
One way of doing this is to just say, "It is over" There will be a temptation of course to share it, but stay strong, find something else to do to take your mind off of it. Remember it is only a story, you can stop it at anytime, you are in control. Don't put your body through that response again and again. Drop it. It can be done. I was very surprised just how effective this works.
When you first start to really master this, you will find all this lovely free space, but you might feel a bit antsy, "What do I do with my time now" Use that time to practice the power of now, find things you love to do. Sit outside and stare up at the stars. Get acquainted with yourself once again, tune into the flow of the universe, feel happiness and joy.
Surrender to what is, become fully present.
